The United States Ambassador to Canada, Bruce Heyman, met today with Premier Wade MacLauchlan to discuss the development of stronger relationships between the United States and Prince Edward Island.

“I look forward to working with Ambassador Heyman and his colleagues in the coming months and years as Prince Edward Island focuses on a new strategic path for economic growth, increased investments and exports,” said Premier MacLauchlan. “The United States is our largest export market, and we want to develop stronger trade relationship with that country.”

Prince Edward Island exports to international markets surpassed $1 billion for the first time in 2014, with approximately 75 per cent of those sales going to the United States.

Ambassador Heyman and Premier MacLauchlan discussed a number of meetings between governments in the two countries in the coming months. Prince Edward Island will be hosting the Southeastern United States and Canadian Premiers Alliance at the end of June. The New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers will be meeting in St. John’s in August and the Summit of North American Governors and Premiers is scheduled for late October.

“There is tremendous potential to forge even stronger relationships with the United States,” said Premier MacLauchlan. “I am impressed with Ambassador Heyman’s commitment to help us develop closer relations with businesses and organizations and build on the success which has already been achieved.”
