Trivia contest Adds New Element To Television Program - Island Focus Tests Viewer's Attention Each Week

Provincial Treasury

A new element to the community outreach television program, Island Focus, has been added this season. Each week viewers are given the opportunity to win an Island Focus travel mug just by watching the program.

In addition to the seven segments that air each week, the program features interesting facts about various aspects of Island life relating to that week's theme. Then, at the end of the program, the Focus Trivia question relates either to one of the segments or the Focus Facts. Viewers are then asked to send in their answers for a chance to win the mug.

"This new element is both fun and educational for our viewers. Once we have chosen the theme that links the segments and host location each week, we research a variety of statistics and facts relating to that theme," stated Ann Stanley, Producer. "The questions really aren't that difficult if you are paying attention. It also provides another public education element to the program."

Another way to enter the contest is on-line. Each week's trivia question and the name of past winners will be featured on the Island Focus website (www.gov.pe.ca/focus). In addition to the trivia contest, the site also includes information on each week's line-up; a list of past shows; biographies on the on-air personalities; and the ability to actually view segments that have appeared on the program.

Island Focus airs on a different day at a new time this season — Wednesdays at 8:00 pm, immediately prior to the broadcast of question period. This week the program will feature stories on Island Information Service; the High School Transition Program; Health Care Futures; PEI Innovations Inc.; Potato Quality Initiatives; Familiarization Tours; and Wrecked Vehicle Enforcement.

This year's host is Gerry Birt who returns after a one year absence and Whit Carter is back as News Anchor. The program was the winner of the 1997 Galaxi Award for Excellence in Programming and was a national award nomination for two years in a row (1998,1999) for best community cable program at the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival.
