Web Site Launched to Offer Increased Information on PEI Securities and Investor Protection Laws

Office of the Attorney General

Investors and investment professionals can now access a new PEI Securities Office Web site for information on PEI securities and investor protection laws.

The site was launched today by the Consumer, Corporate and Insurance Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General.

Attorney General Jeffrey Lantz advised that the PEI Securities Office Web site contains detailed information relating to the legal and regulatory framework governing the investment industry in the province. It provides information on the firms and individuals who are licenced to sell securities or to provide investment advice in the province. The site will also link investors to related sites, such as the other provincial securities regulators and the various educational organizations which provide investor education materials and securities courses.

"With the advancement of new technologies, investors are becoming more and more attuned to the global marketplace," says Minister Lantz. "This new site is an important tool in our continuing efforts to make the activities of the PEI Securities Office accessible to the investing public, both in the province and across the country. It also serves to further our efforts to harmonize and coordinate our securities laws and regulatory practices with those of the other Canadian jurisidictions."

Mark Gallant, Deputy Registrar of Securities, advised that the new site will regularly feature warnings to investors about suspicious or clearly fraudulent investment activity in PEI and throughout the region. "We encourage anyone who has information relating to the activities described on the Web site or other suspicious investment activity in the province to contact us. The information we receive from the public is vital to our efforts to protect the investing public from fraudulent activities."

The Securities Office Web site will be linked to the "YourMoney Network."

"We welcome the Prince Edward Island Securities Office to the "YourMoney Network" and the additional wealth of information that it brings to the site. By continuing to expand our partnerships, we are able to construct a valuable learning path of financial information that is relevant to young people in Prince Edward Island," says Caroline Hubberstey, Atlantic Director, Provincial and Community Affairs, Canadian Bankers Association.

The "YourMoney Network" is a group of non-commercial financial associations and regulatory organizations that formed a partnership to work collaboratively in the development of an integrated on-line resource to educate youth on financial matters, filling a gap for Canadian teachers and students. The guiding principal of the Network is that all information is neutral, informative and objective.

The new PEI Securities Office Web site can be accessed through the provincial government Web site at www.gov.pe.ca/securities.
