Island Correctional Staff to Attend 2002 Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day Service in Ottawa

Office of the Attorney General

On Sunday, September 29, 2002, Island Correctional Staff will attend a special memorial service in Ottawa to commemorate fallen Canadian police and peace officers. National Memorial Day offers Canadians an opportunity to honour the dedication of police and peace officers who made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe. On September 24, 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday in September of every year as Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day.

Five Correctional Officers and one Youth Worker will be attending the Memorial Service in Ottawa representing the Community and Correctional Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General.

"The Canadian Police and Correctional Officers' Memorial Service is an opportunity to recognize, remember and honour those officers who, in the line of duty, have made the ultimate sacrifice," says Attorney General Jeffrey E. Lantz. "The annual memorial offers peace officers from across Canada the opportunity to honour fallen comrades, as well as a chance to meet and discuss working environments and participate in professional development."

Representing Prince Edward Island at the service are Correctional Officers Camille Stone, Provincial Correctional Centre; Christine Hamill, Provincial Correctional Centre; Mike McIver, Prince Correctional Centre; Eugene MacIntyre, Provincial Correctional Centre; Gordon Foster, Prince Correctional Centre and Don Reid, Youth Worker at the PEI Youth Centre.

"The Office of the Attorney General is pleased to work in partnership with the Union of Public Sector Employees to send six peace officers to the memorial weekend in Ottawa," says Attorney General Lantz.

This will be the fifth year that attendance at the Memorial Day Service has been co-sponsored by the Union of Public Sector Employees (UPSE) and the Office of the Attorney General.
