Community Development Bureau Funds Local Projects

Development and Technology

The Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology, today announced funding for three projects through the province's Community Development Bureau.

The Bureau funds initiatives which are identified by local communities as important to their development and sustainability. The success of the Community Development Bureau and its philosophy was recently highlighted in the speech from the throne.

"Government believes strongly that projects which are identified and driven by communities are the most successful," said Minister Currie. "This most recent round of projects demonstrates that community groups are more than eager to do the work necessary to decide what is best for them."

The projects announced today include:

- The Town of Alberton - $10, 494 for a playground project

- St. Nicholas Community Council - $1,500 for a hall renovation project

- Bedeque Area Minor Ball Association - $18,402 for the Kowalski Baseball Park project

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will also contribute $10,428 to the Kowalski Ball Park project through its Sport and Recreation Facilities Development Program.

"Sport and recreation facilities contribute significantly to the health of individuals and the social and economic well being of communities across Prince Edward Island," said Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, the Hon. Elmer MacFadyen. "I am pleased that through the Sport and Recreation Facility Development Program this Government is able to assist in the development of facilities that provide opportunities to reduce physical inactivity among Islanders."

As well, each community will make a significant financial contribution, as well as a contribution of volunteer time to each of the projects.
