Attorney General Announces Appointment to the Council of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island

Honourable Jeffrey E. Lantz, Attorney General today announced the appointment of George Cantelo as a lay member to the Council of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island. The appointment was made by Lieutenant Governor in Council pursuant to the Legal Profession Act, Section 7(1).

"It is my pleasure to congratulate Mr. Cantelo on his appointment to the Council of the Law Society of PEI," says Minister Lantz. "Lay members play a very important role in the business of the law society, and I am sure that Mr. Cantelo brings with him a wealth of knowledge to benefit the council."

Membership of the Council of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island consists of the officers of the society, six members of the society and two lay members. The council is responsible for the management of the affairs of the society.

Mr. Cantelo worked with the provincial government for 32 years, having completed his provincial career after serving as Director of Compensation Services with the PEI Civil Service Commission for nine years. Mr. Cantelo has been an Executive Member to the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust, Past President of the Friends of the Confederation Centre and Vice Chairman of the PEI Employment Standards Board. His community involvement has also included Area Leader to the PEI Heart and Stroke Foundation and Chair of the Stratford Communities in Bloom Committee.

For the past six years, Mr. Cantelo served as a member to the PEI Law Society Discipline Committee. As a lay member of council, he will continue to serve on the discipline committee.

"I am confident that Mr. Cantelo's experiences with the law society, government and in his community will enable him to make a valuable contribution to the Council of the Law Society, and I wish him well in this new role," says Minister Lantz.

Appointments to the Council of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island are effective for three years.
