PEI Energy Corporation Receives a National Award for Climate Change Leadership

Development and Technology

The PEI Energy Corporation has received a prestigious national award for the provincially owned North Cape Wind Farm. Canada's Climate Change Voluntary Challenge and Registry chose the Energy Corporation to receive the Leadership Award in the Greenhouse Gas Offsets category.

VCR Inc is a national non-profit partnership between industry and governments across Canada. Their mission is to provide the means for promoting, assessing and recognizing the effectiveness of the voluntary approach in addressing climate change.

The organization currently has over 900 members across Canada.

The award was presented to Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie at a gala ceremony held this evening at the Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec.

"This award confirms the commitment of government and our staff to seeking alternative energy sources for Prince Edward Island. We have always known that the North Cape Wind Farm would be a great success – but it's good to have our work confirmed by a national organization."

The award recognizes groups who have displayed extraordinary commitment, action and leadership toward voluntary reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The North Cape Wind Farm began producing energy in 2001. It consists of 8 windmills which produce 19 million kilowatt hours of electricity. The electricity is sold to Maritime Electric who, in turn, markets the energy under its Green Power program.

The Energy Corporation is currently working on plans for an expansion of the North Cape Wind Farm.
