ITMG Launches New Event For IT Week – E-Hockey

Provincial Treasury

The staff of the Information Technology Management Group (ITMG), a division of the Provincial Treasury, Government of Prince Edward Island, have combined information technology and NHL hockey to create this exciting new event as part of IT Week in PEI.

"The information technology sector continues to grow and develop into an important part of our diverse economy," said Patricia J. Mella, Provincial Treasurer.

"Today, this industry employs approximately 2,400 Islanders and injects $145 million into the Island economy. IT Week in PEI celebrates this on-going success," added the minister.

The E-Hockey Challenge is a brand new event for IT Week 2003. "Many IT leaders and practitioners were first introduced to technology through a keen interest in video games. The ITMG E-Hockey Challenge concept combines this techno-passion with Islanders' love of hockey. It seemed like the perfect fit for IT Week 2003," said Steven Myers, ITMG Programmer/Analyst and project manager for the event. "We hope to attract over 120 players to our tournament, many of whom could be looking at a future career in the IT industry."

The tournament itself will be played using the popular PC-based game NHL 2003 from EA Sports. The Atlantic Technology Centre in Charlottetown will serve as host location for the ITMG E-Hockey Challenge. Play will begin on Sunday, May 4, from noon until 8 p.m. and continue on Monday, May 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Event sponsors have donated many prizes to be awarded including a Microsoft®Xbox gaming console, a PlayStation®2 and much more.

Pre-registration is required and the fee is $10. To register go to the E-Hockey Challenge Web site at www.itpei.com.
