Health Regions and School Boards to Be Included under Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

Office of the Attorney General

Attorney General Jamie Ballem today announced the expansion of the scope of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to include the Health Regions and the Provincial Health Services Authority, with their accompanying bodies, and the School Boards effective November 8, 2003.

"Since the implementation of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act last November, it has been government's intention to expand the scope of the legislation to include school boards and health regions," said Attorney General Ballem. "Each of these agencies is responsible for large amounts of personal information and this legislation will provide increased guidance on how to collect, use and disclose personal information."

A number of government agencies were given additional time to prepare for new processes set up under the legislation and to deal with large amounts of personal information held by these public bodies.

The process and fee structure for applying for access to records remains the same as the rest of government.

As of November 8, 2003, the following additional public bodies fall under the scope of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act:

• Eastern School District

• Western School Board

• la Commission scolaire de langue franηaise

• Kings Health Region

• East Prince Health Region

• Queens Health Region

• West Prince Health Region

• Provincial Health Services Authority

• Hospital Standards Committees

• Professional/Technical Advisory Committee(s)

• Provincial Health Services Advisory Council

• Provincial Standards Committee

The Access and Privacy Office also took this opportunity to update the list of public bodies under the legislation. Updates to the list will take place on a regular basis.

"With these agencies coming under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, we expand the scope of the act and strengthen our ability to effectively deal with personal information while continuing to provide increased access to government information," said Attorney General Ballem.
