Poultry At The Royal

Island poultry exhibitors were once again part of the grand tradition which is the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Ten exhibitors showed in this year’s edition of the Royal and came away with no less than seventeen breed champion and eleven reserve breed champion wins.

Trevor MacDonald of Murray River had the Champion Mediterranean in a class of 32 entries with his Rose Comb Light Brown Leghorn hen. He was very pleased with the fact that none of his thirty-plus entries placed lower than second prize. His placings were: Black Hamburg – first hen and first pullet; A.O.V. Hamburg – first hen and first pullet; S.C. Light Brown Leghorn – second pullet; A.O.V. Leghorn – first cock, first hen (breed champion), first cockerel, and first pullet; Black Tailed Japanese Bantam – first cock (breed champion), first hen, and first pullet; A.O.V. Japanese Bantam – first cock, first hen, first cockerel, and second pullet; Hamburg Bantam – first cock (reserve breed champion), second hen, first cockerel, and first pullet (breed champion); Silver Sebright Bantam – first cock (breed champion) and first hen (reserve breed champion); A.O.V. Cochin Bantam – second cock, second hen, second cockerel, and first pullet; Light Brahma Bantam – second cock; Ice Pigeon – first (breed champion) and second cocks and first (reserve breed champion) and second hens; Helmet Pigeon – second cock and second hen; Nun Pigeon – first cock (breed champion) and first hen (reserve breed champion).

Clarence Moore, Murray River, had the fourth hen and first cockerel in the Jersey Giant class and the third old female in the class for Cayuga Ducks.

Doug King, Lower Montague, exhibited the Reserve Champion Heavy Duck with his Pekin old female. His winnings were as follows: Pekin Duck – third old male, first old female (breed champion), first, second, and fourth young males, and first, third, and fourth young females; Buff Duck – fourth old male, fourth old female, third young male, and second young female; White Call Duck – fourth old male, fourth old female, first young male, and fourth young female; Grey Call Duck – second young male and third young female; A.O.V. Call Duck – second old male and first old female; Embden Geese – second old male (reserve breed champion), second old female, fourth young male, and second young female.

Colbourne Clow of Freetown had the breed champion New Hampshire with his first prize pullet. In the class of Rouen Ducks, he had the third old female, fourth young male, and third young female. In Aylesbury Ducks, Clow exhibited the first young male (reserve breed champion) and first young female.

Earl Gay from Newtown Cross had the second old male and second old female in Khaki Campbell Ducks.

Garth Taylor, Upton, had the following wins in the pigeon show: Chinese Owl – first cock (reserve breed champion) and first hen (breed champion); Fantail – first cock (reserve breed champion) and first hen (breed champion); Helmet – fourth cock and fourth hen; Lahore – third cock and first hen; Runt – first cock (breed champion); Berliner Tumbler – first cock (breed champion); A.O.V. – third cock and first hen (breed champion).

Steve Webster of Tarantum exhibited the third cockerel and third pullet in the class for Australorps. He had the third cockerel and third and fourth pullets in Buff Brahma Bantams. He also had the first hen, first cockerel, and first (breed champion) and second (reserve breed champion) pullets in the class for Salmon Faverolle Bantams.

Winston Yeo, Belmont, had the fourth prize Australorp pullet as well as the first cockerel (breed champion) and first pullet in the Chantecler class.

Donna Shaw from Lower Montague had the following wins: Cornish – second and third cocks, second and third hens, second cockerel, and second pullet; S.C. Light Brown Leghorn – second cock; Show King Pigeon – first cock (reserve breed champion) and first hen (breed champion); Runt Pigeon – third and fourth cocks and first and third hens.

Daniel Blacquiere was showing in his first-ever Royal. The Tarantum youth had the first and second prize pullets in the Silkie Bantam class. His first prize entry went on to be the breed champion.
