Island Focus has produced a special program lineup for the March 8 broadcast to celebrate International Women’s Day and to increase awareness of family violence prevention.

“I encourage Islanders to watch Island Focus this week for stories of individuals and organizations that are making a positive difference for women and families in Prince Edward Island,” said Honourable Gail Shea, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. “International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on March 8 as a time to reflect on the progress made to advance women’s equality, to assess the challenges facing women and, of course, to recognize gains made in these areas.”

The March 8 broadcast of Island Focus includes segments on woman abuse service protocols created for the justice system, hospitals and social services in PEI as well as family violence and its impact on children. The broadcast will be hosted from East Prince Transition and Support Services in Summerside. Host Gerry Birt will interview Outreach Coordinator Norma McColeman about the organization and its efforts to promote “Random Acts of Kindness” in the community to counterbalance acts of violence.

The lineup will also include a profile of Extra Ordinary Islander Taisa Lambe, who is a 23 year-old councillor for Ward 5 of the City of Summerside.

Island Focus airs Mondays at 7:30 p.m. on EastLink Television. Repeat broadcasts air Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. The weekly program is a production of Multimedia Services, Provincial Treasury and is available to more than 220,000 EastLink subscribers in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Sackville, New Brunswick.

Viewers can visit the Island Focus Web site at www.gov.pe.ca/focus to review the weekly program guide, view segments on-line, enter weekly trivia contests and send feedback about the program. For more information, please contact (902) 368-6322 or send a message to focus@gov.pe.ca.
