Dressage Show Kicks Off 2004 Season

Agriculture, Fisheries, Aquaculture & Forestry

Thirty riders from the three Maritime provinces are expected to compete in the first dressage show of the season on June 5 and 6 at Venture Stables in Freetown. The riders and their horses will compete from the Training level up to the complicated Prix St. Georges test. Five riders will ride freestyle tests to music in the early afternoon on Sunday.

Cara Whitham, Canada’s only Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) “O” eventing judge and FEI “I” dressage judge will judge the DRESSAGE PEI Fair Isle Shows. The FEI governs riding competitions at the international level. Judges are accredited according to their experience and according to the level of competition they are allowed to judge. An “O” level is permitted to judge at the Olympics and an “I” level judge can judge international competitions. Whitham is from Ontario and has judged dressage competitions all over the world.

This show is being held during “Horse Week” which is an initiative of Equine Canada designed to involve Canadians in the sport of horses. The public is invited to watch the dressage competition on June 5 and 6. Admission is free and competition will run from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, contact the Show Secretary, Teresa Mellish at 902-838-4032.
