Minister Currie Urges Islanders to Shop Locally

Development and Technology

The Christmas shopping season is upon us once again, and Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie is urging Islanders to shop locally for all their gifts.

“Consumers have every reason to shop locally. We have no PST on clothing and footwear. By shopping locally, you are supporting your neighbours and your family and your friends. You are providing employment. You are using your money to help keep the Island economy strong.”

Minister Currie pointed out that the growth of the province’s retail sector has meant that Islanders have more choices than ever. PEI’s strong craft sector also provides distinctive and unique Island made gifts.

As of September, retail sales in Prince Edward Island were $1.088 billion for the year. Retail sales in the province have topped the $1 billion mark since 1997.
