Leo Walsh to Travel to the Ukraine as an Election Observer

Executive Council

PEI’s Deputy Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Leo Walsh, will be a member of the Canadian delegation heading to Ukraine to monitor the up-coming election. The delegation will be led by former Prime Minister John Turner. The mission, which is financed by the Canada Corps and Canadian Intergovernmental Development Agency, will be comprised of about 400 Canadians.

Walsh will join the other members of the delegation in Ottawa for a briefing before traveling to Ukraine on December 21. They will remain in the Ukraine until December 29.

Walsh is the only Islander making the trip. “This is really the opportunity of a lifetime,“ he said. “The people in Ukraine have a very intense belief in the power of democracy, and it will be very inspiring to help them make sure their election is a fair one.”

Leo Walsh has held several positions in both the federal and provincial governments, including Deputy Minister of Economic Development and regional head of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
