PEI School Board Elections Scheduled for May 30, 2005

Education

Honourable Mildred Dover, Minister of Education today announced elections will be held May 30, 2005 for trustees’ positions in the three Prince Edward Island school boards: the Eastern School District, the Western School Board and La Commission scolaire de langue française.

The current school board trustees in the province are in the third and final year of their elected mandate and their terms expire on June 30, 2005. This advance notice will allow interested candidates ample opportunity to seek nomination as school board trustees.

“I encourage all Islanders to participate in the electoral process and to consider serving on their school boards as candidates for trustees,” said Minister of Education Mildred Dover. “This is a great opportunity to have a voice in education matters. I encourage all electors to exercise their right to vote on May 30, 2005 by casting a ballot for a candidate in their electoral zone.”

Elections PEI will conduct the school board trustees’ elections across the province, as was the case in the 2002 school board elections. Elections PEI will prepare and distribute elector information packages concerning nominations, eligibility of proposed candidates, zoning maps and voting locations.

The elector information packages will be distributed in April to all of the province’s schools and school board offices. Packages will also be available at all Access PEI Centre locations and the Elections PEI Office at 94 Great George Street, Charlottetown.

Section 31 of the School Act states that school trustee elections shall be held every third year on a date in May fixed by the Minister of Education.
