Employment Standards Board to Conduct Annual Review of Minimum Wage in PEI

Community and Cultural Affairs

The Prince Edward Island Employment Standards Board is set to begin its annual review of the minimum wage in accordance with the Prince Edward Island Employment Standards Act. The Prince Edward Island workforce is made up of approximately 77,000 Island workers of which 62,000 are covered by the Employment Standard Act.

“This annual review is an important opportunity for workers, employers and all interested parties to provide comments to the board on the minimum wage rate in the province,” said Minister MacFadyen. “This annual review looks at such issues as the cost of living and economic conditions in the province in determining the minimum wage.”

The current minimum wage in Prince Edward Island is $6.80. The last increase was effective January 1, 2005. By comparison, the minimum wage in Nova Scotia is $6.50 for experienced and $6.05 for inexperienced workers; in New Brunswick it is $6.30 and in Newfoundland the minimum wage is $6.00.

The Employment Standards Board is inviting submissions from interested parties. Submissions must be received by April 8, 2005. Submissions can be sent to Hazel Walsh, Secretary, Employment Standards Board, PO Box 2000, 31 Gordon Drive Charlottetown, PE C1A 7N8, by fax to 902-368-5476 or by e-mail to hawalsh@gov.pe.ca.

Following the review, the Employment Standards Board will make recommendations for consideration by government.
