Provincial Library Service Launches Stepping Out Program

Community and Cultural Affairs

The Provincial Library Service today announced a unique partnership with the PEI Active living Alliance to offer the Stepping Out Program through library branches across the province. The program was launched today by Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, the Honourable Elmer MacFadyen and President of the PEI Active Living Alliance, Dawn Binns.

This program will allow library patrons the opportunity to borrow pedometers similar to the manner in which they borrow a book, CD or other materials. The program will also see the distribution of a workbook which includes information on increasing activity levels and a log book to record daily steps.

“The Provincial Library Service continues to pursue innovative partnership projects to enhance library service and meet the needs of communities and library patrons,” says Minister MacFadyen. “This is an exciting partnership which increases access to information on active living and provides pedometers to monitor activity levels and encourage physical activity.”

Pedometers and active living information are available through library branches across the province and can be borrowed for six-week periods.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to work together with communities across PEI in an effort to reduce the levels of inactivity. Having low cost and locally available programs make the choice to be active an easier one,” says Dawn Binns, President of the PEI Active Living Alliance.

The PEI Stepping Out Program is an initiative of the PEI Active Living Alliance in collaboration with the provincial Department of Health and Social Services and is designed to increase the physical activity of Islanders. Participants wear pedometers to count each step they take throughout the day. At the end of each day, participants record their daily steps and set goals for each week.
