Community and Cultural Affairs

A Charlottetown Baseball player will lead Prince Edward Island athletes into Saturday’s opening ceremonies for the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina, Saskatchewan. Nineteen-year-old Andrew Macdonald will carry the PEI flag for Team PEI. The opening ceremonies are set for Saturday, August 6 at 5:00 p.m. (CST) at Taylor Field. CBC Coverage of the Opening Ceremonies will air on Sunday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. Competition begins on Sunday, August 7.

“The flag bearer is a very important member of Team PEI, and Andrew has already proven that he is a talented and capable athlete not to mention his leadership and sportsmanship both on and off the field,” says Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for Sport. “I am confident that Andrew will carry our flag with pride as he leads Team PEI through the opening ceremonies.”

Andrew recently completed his first year at the University of Niagara where he is a member of the University Baseball Team. His university stats place him as top batter in conference play and second highest batter overall. He was also named to the All MAAC 2nd All Star Team.

Andrew has accomplished a great deal in baseball having won a silver at the HONDA Hit, Run and Throw Rookie Nationals in 1995 and a Gold at the HONDA Hit, Run and Throw PeeWee Nationals in 1999. He was named an All Star at the Bantam Nationals in 2000, top defensive player at the Bantam Nationals in 2001 and top batter at the Canada Cup in 2002 and 2003. Andrew also earned tryouts with the Canadian Junior National Team in both 2003 and 2004.

“Andrew was nominated as Team PEI Flag Bearer for his athletic ability, his dedication to his sport, his team spirit and his leadership in encouraging and supporting his team,” said Chef de Mission Ted Lawlor. “Team PEI will proudly follow Andrew onto the field on Saturday.”

Team PEI will send more than 268 athletes, coaches and team officials to the Canada Games over the two weeks of competition. The first group leaves on Friday, August 5, from the Charlottetown Airport at 11:58 p.m. Week one will include competitions in baseball, basketball, cycling, women’s soccer, women’s softball, swimming, tennis and sailing. Week two competitions include athletics, men’s soccer, men’s softball, volleyball, wrestling, and field hockey. The National Artists Program will take place over the two weeks of the games.
