Provincial Court Judge Appointed

Office of the Attorney General

The position on the Provincial Court of Prince Edward Island being vacated due to the retirement of Judge Ralph Thompson was filled today. Jeffery E. Lantz, an Island lawyer with a speciality in criminal law and a former Attorney General of Prince Edward Island, was appointed to fill the vacant position.

When Judge Thompson advised the Attorney General of his plans to retire, an independent Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee was established. This Committee is chaired by the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court, a representative of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island, a representative of the Canadian Bar Association, and two members of the community appointed by the Attorney General.

The Committee assessed applicants on the basis of professional experience, judgmental ability, personal characteristics and community awareness. On that basis, the committee rated Mr. Lantz as “highly recommended.”

Jeffery E. Lantz will assume his responsibilities on the Provincial Court effective immediately. Mr. Lantz has indicated his willingness to relocate to Prince County.
