“This collection holds a wealth of valuable information about our people, culture and history,” said Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Honourable Elmer MacFadyen. “It is fitting to celebrate the magazine’s 30th anniversary this year by sharing this information with a whole new generation of The Island Magazine readers and contributors.”

In addition to providing students with valuable resources for school projects and reports, the collection will also provide teachers with teaching tools to build into social studies and history curriculums.

“We are very pleased to receive this donation,” said Education Minister Mildred Dover. “The magazine collections will enrich our libraries, provide students with relevant information and pique their interest in Island history.”

Between 1976 and 2005, The Island Magazine published 58 issues and, while two are currently out of print, a collection of the remaining 56 issues will become permanent fixtures in school libraries across the province.

“The Museum and Heritage Foundation is proud of the role The Island Magazine has played – and will continue to play – in presenting the history of Prince Edward Island. We are delighted to offer this unique resource to Island school students,” said Dr. Satadal Dasgupta, Chair of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation Board.

The Island Magazine was first published in 1976, and since that time has included four editors and more than 350 articles. To this day, The Island Magazine remains the primary publisher of historical writing about Prince Edward Island.
