Minister Currie Announces New Immigrant Program

Development and Technology

Minister of Development and Technology Mike Currie is pleased to announce today a new program designed to encourage immigrants to take an active role in the recruitment of more immigrants to Prince Edward Island (PEI). The Immigrant Connections Program permits new Canadians, recent immigrants and other Islanders to recommend family and close friends who they would like the Province to nominate for immigration through the Provincial Nominee Program.

The Program is administered by Island Investment Development Inc. (IIDI), a crown corporation of the Department of Development and Technology, and is designed to aide in preventing the loss of immigrants to other destinations around the world.

“The Government of Prince Edward Island is working strategically to avoid the anticipated decline in population if current trends continue in the Province,” said Minister Currie. “The Immigrant Connections Program is an excellent fit with other programs and services already offered through the Provincial Nominee Program. An initiative such as this allows immigrants the opportunity to have an active voice as to whom they would like to have apply to live in this Province.”

Through the Program, the Province requires the nominated individual to have skills, training and/or business experience which will help to build economic diversity and, where possible, create more employment. In making a recommendation, the immigrant is not committing to a formal or financial guarantee, but agreeing to assist the nominee to integrate into their new surroundings, helping to make the relocation a success.

Under the Agreement for Canada-Prince Edward Island Co-Operation on Immigration, the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program is a federal five-year, federal-provincial pilot partnership agreement between the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada, represented by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The Nominee Program continues to be very successful in increasing awareness of Prince Edward Island among potential immigrant communities around the world, and attracting immigration – bringing Prince Edward Island rich cultural diversity, new skills, increased employment opportunities and new economic growth.
