Alternative School Students Enjoy ArtsSmarts Project

Community and Cultural Affairs

Students at the EAP Plus school in Summerside are enjoying new ways to learn through a new ArtsSmarts project, entitled “Building a Community: Up Close and Personal in a Maritime Fishing Community.”

EAP Plus is an alternative school for students in grades four to seven. Operated by the Western School Board, it is located at the Boys and Girls Club in Summerside. EAP Plus students have access to hands-on learning opportunities and supports to help build confidence and self esteem.

Through the ArtsSmarts program, teachers and artists help students to learn curriculum through the arts. At EAP Plus, teacher Kelly Adams and Summerside artist Maurice Bernard are helping students to work as a team to construct a three-dimensional model of a fishing community. The students are making model buildings out of mat board, a contoured landscape, water systems and figures using paper mache and clay. They are learning painting techniques, knot tying, map making, tall tale writing, sketching, photography, seafood cooking and more.

EAP Plus teacher Kelly Adams is passionate about improving the lives of her students. “I strongly believe that through the ArtsSmarts program, my students will have opportunities like never before to express their individual talents and they will be able to see themselves as valued community members,” she said.

ArtsSmarts is a program of the Canadian Conference of the Arts. It is supported by the J. W. McConnell Foundation and delivered in Prince Edward Island by the Department of Education, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, PEI Council of the Arts, PEI Crafts Council, the three school boards, U.P.E.I., Fédération culturelle de l'Î-P.-É., Eptek, Confederation Centre of the Arts, and several other partners.

Other schools receiving funding for projects this year include: Spring Park Elementary School, École Évangéline, Elm Street Elementary School, Sherwood Elementary School, Stonepark Intermediate School, Eastern Kings Consolidated School, West Royalty Elementary School, Fortune Consolidated School, East Wiltshire Intermediate School, and Donagh Regional School.
