Honourable Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism, today presented Harry Simmons, President of Golf PEI Inc., a cheque in support of the work that the organization does on behalf of the golf industry across Prince Edward Island.

Golf PEI has spearheaded the golf sector marketing on behalf of the Island’s tourism industry since the early 1990s. While golf has long been part of the PEI’s tourism message, Golf PEI has taken the lead in marketing to the avid golfer who is prepared to travel for his or her passion. The Minister noted, “Golf PEI is a model for successful sector marketing. As a cooperative marketing organization, Golf PEI has done an outstanding job of increasing awareness about Prince Edward Island as a golf destination.”

Golf is a cornerstone of Prince Edward Island’s tourism market. Over the past ten years, the Island’s reputation as one of North America’s great golf destinations has grown significantly. It is estimated that PEI’s golf sector currently generates more than $90 million annually in tourism spending.

Prince Edward Island’s success in establishing its reputation as a golf destination is directly attributable to the quality of its golf product and to its marketing strategy delivered, on behalf of member courses, through Golf PEI. Gary Ready, Executive Director of Golf PEI said, “The cooperative marketing approach embodied by Golf PEI is the envy of other destinations and a model for other tourism sectors. Given the successful history, the logical organization to take responsibility for future golf sector marketing is Golf PEI and we will proudly carry out our role.”
