Amber Handrahan of Alberton is the winner of the 2006 Government of Prince Edward Island Marine Atlantic Bursary.

The provincial government awards the $3,000 bursary each year to recognize the contribution made by Marine Atlantic employees to the Island way of life during the 80 years that they provided the Borden-Cape Tormentine ferry service. The bursary is awarded to a student who is entering post-secondary education for the first time and is a dependent of a former Marine Atlantic employee.

“Amber Handrahan is a very deserving recipient of the bursary,” said Minister Dover. “We are pleased to support her further success while honouring the contributions of her family members and other Marine Atlantic employees.”

Amber plans to enter the Faculty of Science at UPEI this fall and to major in biology. Her future plans are to study veterinary medicine. A member of the Westisle volleyball team for the past three years, Amber excels in both academics and athletics.

She is the daughter of Floyd and Pamela Handrahan of Alberton.
