During Canadian Library Month, provincial libraries will be highlighting the many programs and services available to help Canadians get access to the information they need, and to promote reading and appreciation for Canadian culture.

“In a year when Canadians are focussing much of their attention on the world outside our borders, this year’s theme, “Libraries: the world at your fingertips” is especially apt because it captures the wide range of services available at libraries across the country,” says Canadian Library Association President Linda Cook. “Libraries supply access to the world’s information, whether through flipping the pages of a book, magazine or journal, or by clicking a URL.”

Prince Edward Island Public Libraries provide programs and services to people of all ages, from newborns to seniors. Libraries offer a variety of resources, including books, CDs, movies, magazines, Internet access, and programming to meet the diverse needs of Islanders.

“Our public libraries are a cornerstone of Island communities,” said Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs. “Most residents on Prince Edward Island can be served by a public library within 15 kilometers of their home.”

He noted that the Provincial Library Service website can bring the library into the homes of Islanders. “From the comfort of home and with just a few clicks on the Internet, Islanders can find the library at their fingertips.”

The website features online catalogue listings of library materials including books, DVDs, CDs, videos. Islanders can access 1300 magazine indexes for general reference and consumer health information.

“Library users can open their library account to reserve material which they can then pick up at their local branch,” Minister MacFadyen added. “They can renew books they have signed out, or link to the three major library catalogues on Prince Edward Island.”

The 26 public libraries in the province are celebrating Canadian Library Month with specially planned activities. The Fall Program Guide has a complete listing of activities and celebrations in individual communities and is available free at any public library. The guide can also be downloaded from the library web site at www.library.pe.ca.
