DeltaWare Systems Inc. of Charlottetown has developed an electronic heath solution that has positioned the Prince Edward Island company as a leader of e-Health technology in Canada. Thanks to a long-standing relationship with the Government of Prince Edward Island, DeltaWare has been able to take this technological plan and develop it into a successful business venture.

DeltaWare has significantly improved healthcare delivery services across Canada with Medigent™, an innovative e-Health product that provides the exchange and management of electronic medical and health information through the use of technology.

“The Government of Prince Edward Island embraced a vision for e-Health in this province and the result is a story of success and prosperity,” said Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island. “DeltaWare is an innovative company that creates employment opportunities for Islanders. This strategic partnership is a shining example of what can be accomplished when government and local business work together.”

The e-Health system advances patient safety by allowing all data concerning a patient’s medication to be clinically analyzed and accessed provincially by caregivers who prescribe and dispense medications.

“We were able to expand our e-Health initiatives by working with the Government of Prince Edward Island,” said DeltaWare Systems President, Ed Lawlor. “A partnership with provincial government allowed us to build the initial product and a test environment for a new electronic system which would be the first of its kind in Prince Edward Island, and Canada. The result was the development of Medigent™ version 1, an electronic medical claims processing system replacing the previous method of a paper-based system.”

With the successful implementation of the Medigent™ medical claims processing component, DeltaWare continued to work to implement additional e-Health capabilities. The system was launched across Prince Edward Island and has since been expanded to include Dental, Pharmacy, Medical Travel, Electronic Medical Record, and most recently a complete Drug Information System that is the first in Canada to meet new national standards.

Some of the components that were first developed and implemented for the PEI Government, have since been deployed in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunatsiavut, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Hard work and perseverance has led DeltaWare down a road of opportunity,” said the Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology. “The Island-based company has utilized the PEI workforce and has been able to make a considerable contribution toward the province’s economic growth over the last number of years.”
