During a visit to Summerside today, Education Minister Mildred Dover helped kick off a fundraising campaign for a national student leadership conference that will be held in Summerside in September 2008.

Minister Dover presented campaign co-chairs Nicole Haire-Smith and Randy Gallant with a donation of $25,000 from the Department of Education.

This is the first time that the Canadian Student Leadership Conference has ever been hosted by Prince Edward Island. It is expected to draw over 1,000 people to the province for at least a week.

The conference participants will include 600 students and 250 teacher advisors from every province and territory, including 100 students from PEI high schools and 90 spirit leaders from Three Oaks Senior High School.

Minister Dover said that in addition to the major economic benefits the conference will produce, it will be an excellent investment in Island youth. “At the conference, students will be trained in various facets of leadership. Then, they will return to their schools and use their skills to motivate others and enrich their school environments,” she said. “Over 250 student advisors will also receive intensive training in how to develop and support student leadership skills. They, in turn, will go home and share their new knowledge and skills with their fellow teachers and student leaders,” she said.

Students, teachers and guests will have opportunities to tour the Island while they are visiting.
