Municipalities to Benefit from new Online Service

Provincial Treasury

A new online service designed to help municipalities has been announced by Provincial Treasurer Wes Sheridan.

“With this new system, municipal administrators will be able to more easily find information about any property within their boundaries,” Mr. Sheridan said. “This is a wonderful example of how the provincial and municipal governments can work together to improve services to Island taxpayers.”

Municipal Assessment and Property Charges Online (MAPCO) is a web-based application that was specifically developed and customized to provide Prince Edward Island’s 75 municipalities with timely information. The province is providing the service to the municipalities free of charge.

“Municipal staff will now be able to access key information with ease and efficiency,” Mr Sheridan said. “MAPCO will help staff confirm ownership of a property, access up-to-date information for the purpose of preparing reports and/or municipal planning, save storage space and increase productivity by eliminating the time-consuming tasks of retrieving and re-filing assessment roll books.”

Robert Hughes, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Stratford has been piloting the new service for several months. "The MAPCO program allows staff to quickly and efficiently obtain up-to-date information on Town properties. It is much better than relying on the printed assessment rolls. It is more current and it is used regularly by Town staff.“

MAPCO allows administrators to search for a property in their municipality by the parcel identification number (PID), by civic address, or by the owner’s name. Once located, they can view and print assessment and property charges information. Reports can also be printed and files can be downloaded to use in applications or spreadsheets.

“This new service enhances our goal of assisting Island communities in providing efficient government to their residents,” says Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “By giving municipalities easier access to relevant and timely information, we hope to increase cooperative efforts and government's effectiveness.”

During the past month, Jason MacAulay, the project coordinator has been demonstrating the system to municipal representatives from across the Island. “The initial reaction has been quite positive,” says MacAulay. “So far, I’ve had a dozen municipalities sign on. Municipal administrators who haven’t been able to attend a demonstration can still register by visiting https://www.gov.pe.ca/mapco and clicking “online request form” and following the instructions on the screen, or they can call me at (902) 620-3070 and I’ll send them an application form.”
