Lower income seniors of Prince Edward Island living in their own homes will once again receive assistance for emergency home repairs thanks to an announcement today by the Minister Responsible for Seniors.

“I am pleased to announce the re-introduction of the Seniors’ Emergency Home Repair Program,” said Honorable Doug Currie, Minister of Social Services and Seniors. “This is an investment of $350,000 and will provide 50 per cent of repair costs up to $1,500 for non-cosmetic improvements to homes of Island seniors.”

A priority of the Prince Edward Island Seniors’ Secretariat, which is made up of representatives of seniors’ organizations and provincial government, is to improve supports for seniors living in their own homes.

Anna Duffy, co-chair of the Seniors’ Secretariat, said that housing is a key determinant of an individual’s health and well-being. “The Seniors’ Emergency Home Repair Program will help more seniors safely stay in their own homes and communities longer,” she said.

To qualify for the program, individuals must be 60 years of age or older; the combined net income of the applicant and spouse must be under $30,000; the house to be repaired must be the principal residence; and the repairs must be essential to the structure of the building.

The program will begin November 1, 2007.
