Lower income families of Prince Edward Island are benefiting from renovations at two housing complexes in Charlottetown.

New funding of $536,000 has been provided by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Department of Social Services and Seniors to modernize two existing family housing complexes in Charlottetown located on Queen Street and Dresden Court.

“The Government of Canada is committed to making quality, affordable housing available in Prince Edward Island and across Canada for those who need it most,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister of ACOA, and Minister responsible for Prince Edward Island, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. “This investment will provide safe, affordable and quality housing for lower income families in Charlottetown so they can begin to build safer, stronger and better futures for themselves.”

Renovations to the housing complexes will include window and door replacements, roofs, cupboards and siding. Work will be carried out over the winter months.

The federal and provincial governments provide funding for family and seniors’ public housing programs. Both programs are operated by the Department of Social Services and Seniors. “We value our partnership with the Government of Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in providing Islanders with safe, affordable and adequate housing,” said Minister of Social Services and Seniors, Doug Currie.

The Family Housing Program provides quality rental housing units for families with low incomes, poor housing conditions or other special circumstances that create a need for assistance. Rent is based on total household income and is calculated using a rent-to-income scale. Family housing units are currently available in nine locations in the province.
