Tourism

Tourism PEI, along with the Anne 2008 Centennial Committee, is pleased to announce today the official launch of a new Anne 2008 Invitational Contest, as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the publication of L.M. Montgomery’s novel Anne of Green Gables™. The contest will run until midnight on Wednesday, July 2, 2008. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremonies of the Anne of Green Gables Festival on July 6, 2008 in Cavendish.

Residents in Prince Edward Island are asked to personally invite email friends and/or relatives in Canada and the United States to enter for a chance to win a sizeable cash prize. One lucky winner in Prince Edward Island will win $10,000, and another winner outside of the province will win a prize of $5,000 towards a trip to the Island.

“This year, the entire province will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Anne of Green Gables™ novel,” said Valerie Docherty, Minister of Tourism. “This contest will help to build excitement and afford Islanders an opportunity to become Prince Edward Island ambassadors. Through their efforts, participants will help to increase awareness about our beautiful province as a premier vacation destination.”

The contest offers Islanders, Canadians and US residents a chance to enter to win a trip to Prince Edward Island. Entering the contest is made simple by visiting www.Anne2008contest.com and filling out an online electronic form. Each entry represents a chance to win and the more entries, the more chances to win. A weekly trivia question regarding Anne of Green Gables or L.M. Montgomery will be provided on the site to increase the participant’s chances.

“The contest will also help the tourism industry grow the database of potential tourism customers for future promotions,” said Minister Docherty. “Islanders are known for their warm hospitality, and with all of the Anne-related activities taking place throughout the season, we want visitors and Islanders alike to feel welcome to come celebrate with us.”

The Anne 2008 website has been created to serve as the central information source for Anne-related activities happening throughout the year. The site also offers Anne packaging by tourism operators; educational components for teachers and schools across Canada; a new Tour the Island component, which includes a souvenir Anne Passport; links to the Tourism P.E.I. website www.gentleisland.com; projects and coloring book pages for children; literary competitions and challenges for all ages and much more.
