Western Hospital Experiences Temporary Emergency Room Closure

Health

The public is advised that the Emergency Room at Western Hospital will be temporarily closed effective 8 a.m., Wednesday, October 22 until 8 a.m., Friday, October 24.

The temporary closure of emergency services is necessary because of difficulties securing physician coverage for this time period. The decision to temporarily close emergency services was made only after pursuing all other alternatives.

For medical emergencies, the public is advised to call 911 or seek emergency services through the Community Hospital in O’Leary or the Prince County Hospital in Summerside. Island EMS is aware of the temporary closure. They have the necessary protocols in place to ensure that Island EMS staff can respond appropriately to any calls they receive in the West Prince area.

Residents of West Prince can be assured that Western Hospital and the Department of Health are working hard to fill the physician complement in order to eliminate the need for any temporary closures. Physicians and staff at Western Hospital play an important role in the provincial health system and are committed to delivering high quality health care to their patients and communities.
