“We recognize the importance of providing police services that are culturally appropriate and accountable to the communities they service,” said Minister Greenan, “and I’m very pleased that we have undertaken this new agreement.”

“The Government of Canada is committed to making communities safer and we are doing this today by working with the province of Prince Edward Island and the Abegweit First Nation,” said the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety. “We are pleased to be part of this agreement which will enhance policing services to meet the needs of the community.”

Under the four-year agreement, one RCMP Regular Member will be specifically assigned to the policing priorities of the Abegweit First Nation, which is comprised of three reserves located in Scotchfort, Rocky Point and Morell Rear. The officer will perform regular duties as well as provide a community policing service, with an emphasis on community relations, school liaison, senior safety programs and other priorities as determined within the community. This position will be cost-shared by the federal and provincial governments. The RCMP have already begun the process of staffing this new position.

“Building a positive working relationship with the RCMP is a top priority for members of Abegweit First Nation and we are pleased to be entering into this agreement,” said Chief Francis. “We look forward to working together with all stakeholders to make our communities stronger and safer.”

“We’ve had a community policing agreement with the Lennox Island First Nation, and it has been very positive,” said Minister Greenan. “Now members of the Abegweit First Nation will have access to a similar service.”

“The Abegweit First Nation has joined the ranks of the many First Nations across Canada which benefit from community tripartite agreements,” said Minister Van Loan. “This agreement is a milestone.”
