Emerging Artists Invited to Apply for National Artist Program

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

Team PEI is looking for three emerging artists, age 16 to 22, to represent our province as part of the National Artist Program (NAP) during the 2009 Canada Games. The NAP is a two-week mentorship and developmental program in which three PEI artists will work with 36 other artists from across Canada to interpret the theme of the Games individually and collectively through their art.

“NAP provides a wonderful opportunity for emerging artists to work with national mentors to develop their artistic abilities within the Canada Games setting,” said Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “With arts and culture playing such an important role in our Island way of life, we know we have some very deserving young artists who can wear our provincial colors during the Games.”

The program is open to artists in a variety of disciplines including:

• literary arts (poetry, prose, playwriting, spoken word, storytelling)

• visual arts (painting/drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, photography, film/videography, and other multimedia)

• dance/movement arts (dancers of all styles, choreographer)

• theatre arts (acting, improvisation, set design, costume design, director, circus arts, interarts)

• music arts (performer, conductor, composer).

To apply, visit the Team PEI website at www.gov.pe.ca/teampei or contact Claire Matheson 368-4787 to obtain a detailed technical package and application form. Application deadline is February 11, 2009.

The 2009 Canada Games will be held in PEI from August 15 to 29.
