Environment, Energy and Forestry Minister Richard Brown announced departmental awards for participants at the annual PEI Science Fair held recently at the Chi Wan Young Sports Centre on the UPEI campus.

“The theme for the fair was Celebrating Science on PEI, and the ingenuity and creativity displayed by more than 300 of our young science minds from 39 schools across the Island was amazing,” Minister Brown said.

The presentations were judged, and the top five students will represent PEI at the Canada-Wide science fair in Winnipeg.

The recipients of prizes sponsored by the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry are:

Mark Henderson from West Royalty Elementary for first place in the Forests and Forest Products Section for his project, “The Floor Beneath Our Feet,” comparing the durability and strengths of various flooring products, including many wood-based products.

Grace Hickey from West Kent Elementary for second place in the Forests and Forest Products Section for her project, “Batty For Echolocation,” demonstrating how bats use sound to find their prey.

Zachary Desroche from Elm St. Elementary for third place finish in the Forests and Forest Products section for his project, “Eco-warriors,” which provided feeding and habitat requirements for our native bat species – Little Brown Bat.

The PEI Energy Corporation provided awards for projects that best promote the concept of renewable energy and energy efficiency. The recipients were:
