Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour recently attended events to recognize the achievements of artists and participants in the Learning Elders Arts Program (LEAP), which took place throughout Prince Edward Island this past winter.

“During the last five months, the newly created Learning Elders Arts Program has provided opportunities for Island Seniors to work with artists on various projects from play writing, to painting, to clay exploration,” said Minister Bertram. “I commend the PEI Seniors Federation for their efforts to coordinate the delivery of this program, and congratulate the artists, facilitators and seniors who participated in all these amazing projects.”

The Learning Elders Arts Program is funded by the provincial government through the Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour and administered by the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation. The program was designed to increase the viability of the arts and provide Island seniors with the necessary tools to improve their quality of life and reduce social isolation in both rural and urban areas.

The total budget for the Learning Elders Arts Program for 2008-09 was $40,000 for program delivery and $10,000 for the administration of the program by the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation. An adjudication team, consisting of representatives of the PEI Council of the Arts, the PEI Crafts Council, the Federation culturelle de l’IPE and the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation, reviewed and assessed the applications.
