Prince Edward Island Supports Fire Fighter Training

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

At the 2009 Fire Fighters Association’s Annual Meeting and Trade Show on Sunday Oct 4, the Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour announced new funding to support training for our Island firefighters.

"Fire fighters play an important role in the safety and security of Islanders," said Minister Bertram. "Government is supportive of the continued success of the PEI Fire School and the vital role played by the PEI Fire Fighters Association to provide this necessary training."

Through the province’s Island Community Fund, government has approved $150,000 to the PEI Firefighters Association for their apparatus building to house fire trucks and to serve as a training facility for fire fighters and hazardous materials response team.

Our Island Community Fund includes funding for community safety and security and numerous Fire Departments from across the province have made application and are receiving financial support through this program. Over the past year the province has approved over $680,000 for fire related equipment and facility upgrades under the this program.

Committed to in Budget 2008, the Island Community Fund represents a provincial investment of $27.5 million towards the infrastructure needs of Prince Edward Island communities. The Fund consists of two components - a small projects component, and a strategic initiatives component. Eligible categories of funding under this program include: Community Safety and Security; Recreation; and Cultural infrastructure not funded under the current programs; a high priority will also be given to projects which support strategic initiatives for the entire province.
