The North River Fire Hall has received $89,130 through the Province’s Island Community Fund to complete major renovations to their facility, says the Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour.

“The Fire Hall is an important facility for the community,” said Minister Bertram. “These upgrades will increase the energy efficiency of the building and make it more accessible and barrier free.”

The project includes major renovations to the second storey of the building, including accessible barrier free washrooms, kitchen improvements, insulation replacement and the installation of a central air-conditioning system. The total cost of the project will be $118,839 with the province investing $89,130 and the Fire Department contributing the remaining $29,709.

“The Fire Hall is used on a regular basis for not only fire fighter training, but also social events, fundraisers and community meetings,” said Minister Bertram. “The province is pleased to support this important initiative for the North River Fire Club and the Town of Cornwall.”

Committed to in Budget 2008, the Island Community Fund represents a provincial investment of $27.5 million towards the infrastructure needs of Prince Edward Island communities. The Fund consists of two components – a small projects component, and a strategic initiatives component. Eligible categories of funding under this program include Community Safety and Security, Recreation, and Cultural infrastructure not funded under the current programs; a high priority will also be given to projects which support strategic initiatives for the entire province.
