Centennial Park Upgrades Completed
Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour
The Community of North Rustico has recently completed $30,400 in renovations at Centennial Park. These renovations were made possible through the financial support of the Province’s Island Community Fund and the federal Recreation Infrastructure Fund (RInC).
Two new pieces of equipment were purchased and installed at the playground; one piece of equipment is the first of its kind on Prince Edward Island, an outdoor-fit exercise multi-gym designed for adult use. It creates an opportunity for adults to participate in physical activity while at the park.
“The new equipment provides additional recreational opportunities for individuals of all ages and has brought the playground up to CSA standards,” said Minister Bertram. “The upgraded facility encourages residents of all ages to be active, as well as provides them with a facility to do so, at no charge to the user. Upgrades now make this a true multi-generational park for the Community of North Rustico. This is a wonderful example of an outdoor wellness facility for all ages.
“As part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the RInC program is helping communities like North Rustico to renovate and upgrade local recreational facilities and, in the process, generate local economic activity, support jobs and renew recreational facilities that will benefit area residents for years to come,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for ACOA. “Our support for Centennial Park is an investment in North Rustico’s future.”
A KanKids play structure was also installed at Centennial Park to create a safer and more stimulating play area for children.
The total cost of the project was $30,400, with the Province of Prince Edward Island investing $12,768, the Government of Canada investing $10,032 and the Community of North Rustico funding the remaining amount of $7,600.
Committed to in Budget 2008, the Island Community Fund represents a provincial investment of $27.5 million towards the infrastructure needs of Prince Edward Island communities. The Fund consists of two components – a small projects component, and a strategic initiatives component. Eligible categories of funding under this program include: Community Safety and Security, Recreation, and Cultural infrastructure not funded under the current programs; a high priority will also be given to projects which support strategic initiatives for the entire province.
The Island Community Fund is just one component of the over $80 million the province is investing in infrastructure for our one island community.
Through the RInC program, the Government of Canada has committed $500 million over two years to support upgrades and repairs to recreational facilities in Canadian communities. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) delivers RInC in Atlantic Canada.
