Nominations Sought for Heritage Awards

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

Cultural Affairs Minister Carolyn Bertram and Acting Museum Board Chair Philip Macdonald are asking Islanders to spend some time thinking about identifying the volunteers who contribute so much to the preservation of the province’s heritage.

“The Heritage Awards are the Museum’s way of recognizing activities and individuals from across our province for their personal commitment to heritage,” said Minister Bertram.

Chairperson Philip Macdonald noted that the organization has recognized hundreds of activities and individuals over the last thirty years. “The amazing thing is that each year we learn of dozens of heritage activities that prove how important heritage is to Islanders,” Chairperson Macdonald added. “We want people to let us know about individuals and organizations that deserve to be recognized.”

The Museum and Heritage Foundation has opened the nomination process for the annual Heritage Awards program. The program consists of a series of awards for individuals and groups who have contributed to preserving and promoting the province’s past. There are specific awards for volunteer and youth activities, publications, genealogy, architectural heritage, performance activities and natural heritage. In addition, there is an Award of Honour for long-term commitment to heritage.

The deadline for nominations is 16 November. Details of the program and nomination forms can be obtained by contacting the Museum at 368-6600 and on the website at www.peimuseum.com.

Awards will be presented during Heritage Week in February. This year the ceremony will be held in Summerside.
