Lieutenant Governor Grants Royal Assent to 23 Bills

Lieutenant Governor's Office

The Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Prince Edward Island has granted Royal Assent to 23 bills passed by the Legislative Assembly during the Fall sitting of the House. Her Honour, the Honourable Barbara A. Hagerman, received the Honourable Kathleen Casey, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly; Honourable Olive Crane, Leader of the Opposition; Robert Vessey, Government House Leader; and Charles MacKay, Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, in Chambers at Government House early Wednesday morning for purpose of granting Royal Assent (the final stage that a bill must complete before officially becoming an Act of the Legislature). A bill may not receive Assent until it has passed through all stages of the legislative process in the Legislative Assembly.

Royal Assent is required because Canada is a constitutional monarchy, and the representative of the Crown must approve all bills before they can become law.
