Disability Action Council to Meet Today for its Inaugural Meeting
Social Services and Seniors
“I am pleased to announce that Marcia Carroll will chair the Disability Action Council. Marcia, Executive Director of the PEI Council of People with Disabilities, brings with her a wealth of knowledge and years of advocacy for persons with disabilities. I am certain that the Council will be highly effective under her leadership,” said Minister Currie.
One of the first priorities of the Council will be to assist with a social marketing campaign focusing on the six themes contained in the Disability Service Review. It will work to raise awareness, promote inclusion and opportunities, highlight the contributions people with disabilities make to their communities and change public attitudes.
“Our Government has been working on a number of areas related to the recommendations from the Disability Services Review. The Disability Action Council will play a key role in helping us meet the needs of Islanders living with disabilities,” said Minister Currie.
The Disability Action Council is comprised of 19 members from various areas of the community including businesses, non-governmental organizations, government departments and advocacy groups. The Council will meet six times a year, will be accountable to the Minister of Social Services and Seniors, and will be required to provide Executive Council an annual progress report.
