A group of 12 Island high school students will have a chance to develop their leadership skills this summer through the Shad Valley enrichment program, says Allan Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning.

The summer-long Shad Valley program is designed to encourage young people to become innovative leaders in science, technology and entrepreneurship.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students from across the province to learn what it takes to be innovative leaders,” said Minister Campbell. “Government is excited to be making this investment and encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in Prince Edward Island’s young people.”

The Shad Valley program begins with a four-week enrichment program at one of 10 universities across Canada that will feature hands-on workshops and group projects. Students then have the option to take part in a four- to six-week internship with a company in their area of interest.

The province is committing $25,000 per year to the Shad Valley program for the next three years. From that investment, Shad Valley will award the Premier’s Innovation Scholarships of $1,000 to each PEI participant. Additional awards and bursaries are also available from Shad Valley.

Since 1988, 62 students from PEI have participated in the Shad Valley program. This year, 12 Island students will be taking part in the program.

“We are pleased to see young people taking advantage of this unique learning opportunity,” said Minister Campbell. “The students in this program have the potential to become community leaders, and we hope to see great things from them.”

The Island students taking part in the program are: Morgan Roggeveen, Cornwall; Julian Gurnell, Kensington; Andrew Reeves, Kinkora; Brianna Silliker, Kensington; Brooke Currie, Stratford; Danielle Peters, Souris; Chris Thompson, Summerside; Dalton MacKenzie, Cornwall; Ellen Murphy, Kensington; Emma Meanor, Morell; Meagan McCardle, Kinkora; and Michael Chen, Charlottetown.

The universities that will host the students are: Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia; Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario; McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario; Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland; Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario; Université Laval, Quebec City, Québec; University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia; University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick; and University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario.
