A team from Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside will be representing Prince Edward Island at the 2010 Canon Envirothon Competition in Fresno, California August 1-6, 2010.

The Canon Envirothon is an annual competition for high school-aged students throughout North America that allows participants to demonstrate their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. Each team is evaluated on their performance in five areas: Soil and Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife and a current environmental issue which changes each year. This year’s issue is the Protection of Groundwater Through Urban, Agriculture and Environmental Planning.

“Environmental education programs like the Canon Envirothon are wonderful initiatives that inform and engage young people in environmental stewardship,” said Summerside MLA Gerard Greenan, on behalf of Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry, Richard Brown. “Creating a more knowledgeable and environmentally conscientious youth will help maintain and improve the quality of life of our environment.”

The Province of Prince Edward Island has contributed $500 to help fund the team’s participation in the international event.

Members of the Three Oaks team are Wayne Gallant, Jenna Gaudet, Justeann Hansen, Gregory McGuire, Matthew Rice, and teachers Heather Pringle and Chris Higginbotham.
