Chinese Government to Honour Prince Edward Island’s Shuo (Sherry) Huang

Innovation and Advanced Learning

The recognition of a leading Chinese-born Islander by the Chinese government is great news for the province and a good example of the contributions being made to the province by new Islanders, says Allan Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning.

Shuo (Sherry) Huang is a guest of the government of China this week, where she is being recognized by the Chinese State Council as one of 500 outstanding Chinese descendants around the world.

Ms. Huang is president of the Canadian Chinese Association of Prince Edward Island and works as CEO and majority shareholder of Study Abroad Canada Language Institute. She is a board member of the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Ms. Huang has been active in organizing provincial trade missions to China and attended the 2008 Canadian Leaders Mission to China led by five Canadian premiers.

“The success of Sherry Huang is an amazing example of the way new Islanders have been able to come to Prince Edward Island and find business and cultural opportunities that benefit both their native countries and their new Island home,” said Allan Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning.

“Sherry Huang is clearly an exceptionally talented and hardworking woman. But right across the province we are starting to see the benefits of government’s efforts of recruiting successful, capable people from around the world to new homes in Prince Edward Island.”

Sherry Huang is a leader among the community of more than 1,000 new Islanders with Chinese roots. She says she intends to continue to grow her international language training business and to look for business opportunities linking China and Prince Edward Island.

This week, Sherry Huang is visiting China with stops in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing to explore business opportunities. The tour will include attendance at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
