A drawing done by a student at Georgetown Elementary School has been selected by Natural Resources Canada as the provincial classroom poster for 2011.

Lauren MacConnell, a Grade seven student, was presented with an award at the school by Environment, Energy and Forestry Minister Richard Brown during Canadian Environment Week.

“This contest is a great way to get young students from across the province thinking about and involved with protecting the environment, ” Minister Brown said.

Each year the federal department of Natural Resources Canada holds an art contest for children aged 6-13. NRCan publishes artwork from the contest, selecting one drawing from each province and territory in Canada.

The provincial department of Environment, Energy and Forestry coordinates the contest on PEI. The selected PEI image is available by following the Art Gallery link online at www.oee.nrcan.gc.ca/calendarclub.

“Our students are our future leaders and having them understand and talk about the importance of the environment today will go a long way toward ensuring our environment is protected for years to come,” Minister Brown said.
