There is now another reason to visit the community of Morell. Thanks to federal and provincial investments, improvements have been made to the trails and look-out platforms surrounding Mooney’s Pond and the Jim Anderson Angling Pool.

“Our government invested $44,720 to allow better access to Mooney’s Pond and the Jim Anderson Angling Pool by creating new pathways and upgrading existing trails.” said the Honourable Mike Duffy, Senator for Prince Edward Island (Cavendish), on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our government continues to make investments in infrastructure that keep our rural communities vibrant and strong.”

“This investment helps make the Mooney’s Pond and Jim Anderson Angling Pool areas accessible to more Islanders and visitors than ever. I’m very pleased to have been part of making this upgrade possible and to have helped Islanders get valuable job experience on this project through Skills PEI,” said the Honourable Allan Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. “By protecting natural areas, boosting local recreation opportunities and helping create local jobs this government is delivering on the commitments it made in the Rural Action Plan.”

The investment helped the Morell Management Co-op Inc. introduce needed upgrades to the area and trails that included making almost 30 per-cent of the trails wheel-chair accessible. The trail now connects with the Confederation Trail, expanding access to the area for residents and visitors alike. Along with the improvements to the trails, there have also been renovations made to the existing lodge and a series of look-out platforms have been added. The Province of Prince Edward Island contributed $166,334 through Skills PEI and Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development.

“Mooney’s Pond and Jim Anderson Angling Pool is a beautiful part of our community,” said Leo Gill, a Morell River Management Co-op representative. “With the investments both levels of government, we were able to make this area even better and now visitors and residents will be able to enjoy this community treasure even more.”
