Major renovations are wrapping up at the popular West Point Lighthouse Inn and Restaurant thanks to support from the federal and provincial governments and the community. The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, the Honourable Neil LeClair, PEI Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development and Bruce Smallman, Chair of the West Point Development Corporation, today participated in the Grand Opening celebrations.

“Our Government’s investment coupled with support from the province and the community, means that this iconic local facility will continue to contribute to the vitality of the local economy,” said Minister Shea. “I commend the vision the West Point Development Corporation and its dedication to economic development in Western Prince Edward Island.”

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the PEI Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, through Skills PEI, the PEI Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, and the West Point Development Corporation have invested in this project.

The restaurant, previously housed within the Lighthouse, has been relocated to the Harbourside Centre. A new boardwalk and trail is nearing completion along the dunes which leads visitors from the Lighthouse to the Harbourside Centre. New interpretive signage will better feature the property, and landscaping improvements enhance the first impression of the historic site.

“West Point Lighthouse is not just a historic building, it is an important centre for tourism and community activity,” said Minister LeClair. “The government of Prince Edward Island is proud to support work that preserves our Island heritage while creating local economic opportunities.”

“This historic property has been successfully revitalized, and we couldn’t be more pleased,” said Mr. Smallman. “With the support from the federal and provincial governments, we were able to properly preserve this valuable tourist attraction and better serve guests to the Inn and restaurant with a unique experience.”

The property is in operation from June to October.
