Public Service Week begins today with a celebration of the integral role diversity plays in the workforce, says Finance and Municipal Affairs Minister Wes Sheridan.

“As an employer the Province is pleased to foster a diverse, welcoming and inclusive workplace,” said Minister Sheridan. “Our diversity leaders recognized today have shown a consistent commitment to promoting the value of diversity within our Public Service; this leadership benefits fellow employees and results in improved services for all Islanders.”

Employees of the Province of Prince Edward Island gathered at St. Peter's Cathedral Hall over lunch hour to begin the 2011 Public Service Week with the awards ceremony and an International Tea House where performers and presenters shared their cultural heritage.

On behalf of the Honourable Premier Robert Ghiz, Minister Sheridan recognized all nominees for their contribution and presented diversity awards to Michael Fagan for his dedicated leadership in recruiting employees from diverse backgrounds, to the Diversity Training, HR Planning Team, and to the Disability Support Program Unit of the Department of Community Services, Seniors and Labour for their leadership and contribution to diversity.

“You truly have worked hard to create a workplace culture for a representative and inclusive public service,” said Minister Sheridan. “The diversity of our One Island Community is one of our strengths and it is important to us for our staff to feel valued for their work and for their diversity of background and perspective which contributes to our harmonious and cohesive public sector workforce.”
