Craft Education Award Bursary awarded to Three Oaks student

The Government of Prince Edward Island is helping a promising Summerside artist attend college through the annual Craft Education Bursary, says Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allan Campbell.

“The Craft Education Award Bursary is just one way we’re helping Island students achieve the best they can in education,” said the Minister. “We’re proud to be able to encourage talented people to develop their skills and pursue career and business opportunities.”

Danielle Gallant, a Grade 12 student from Three Oaks Senior High, was awarded the Craft Education Award Bursary June 23. The annual prize is given out by Innovation PEI through the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning.

The Craft Education Award Bursary is awarded to a student from Prince Edward Island who is pursuing education at an Arts school off Island. The award gives up to $5,000 per year, for a maximum of four years. Students who receive this award are required to return to Prince Edward Island and work within the craft, art and giftware sector for up to four years, depending on the amount of the bursary.

Gallant is an accomplished artist, having had her artwork displayed and sold most recently at the LeFurgey Center in Summerside.

She is attending the Nova Scotia School of Craft, Art and Design in the Fall where she will be taking the Foundation program, focusing on Art.

“It was a surprise to get the award, and I was really happy and excited,” said Gallant.

Gallant plans on moving back to the Island and starting her own craft business when she is finished school.

“I’ll see how school goes and then I’ll go from there with starting a business,” she said.
